If you are new to recording video for podcasts, here are some tips here are a few simple tips for setting up your space before our recording to make you sound and look your best.
How to Optimize Your Home Setup for a Great Podcast Recording (Webcam Video Edition)
1. Lighting: Make Sure We Can See You Clearly
3. Sound: Quiet, Please
4. Mic Check: Use the Best Audio You Can
6. Background: Keep it Clean
7. Framing & Appearance
- Face a window if possible—natural light is best.
- If it’s dark or uneven, use a lamp or ring light placed in front of your face, not behind or overhead.
- Avoid backlighting (don’t sit with a bright window behind you)
- Place your webcam or laptop at eye level, not below your face.
- Use books, boxes, or a stand to raise your device if needed.
- Frame yourself from the chest up, with a little space above your head
3. Sound: Quiet, Please
- Choose a quiet room and close windows and doors.
- Ask others in your space to keep things quiet during recording.
- Turn off notifications on your phone and computer
4. Mic Check: Use the Best Audio You Can
- Best option: An external USB microphone or headset.
- Next best: Wired earbuds with a built-in mic.
- Avoid: Using your laptop's built-in mic if you can—it picks up too much room noise
- A wired connection (ethernet) is ideal. If using Wi-Fi, sit close to your router.
- Close other apps and browser tabs to keep your connection strong
6. Background: Keep it Clean
- Choose a background that is simple and tidy—a bookshelf or blank wall is great.
- Avoid sitting in front of mirrors or cluttered spaces.
- Don’t worry about perfection—just try to reduce distractions
7. Framing & Appearance
- Wear solid colors rather than busy patterns or bright white (which can mess with exposure).
- Avoid noisy jewelry that might clink against your mic.
- Check your framing and lighting with your webcam in advance, if possible.
- Plug in your device or ensure your battery is full.
- Have a glass of water nearby.
- Sit in a comfortable, upright position—you’ll look and sound more engaged.
